Please read the following very
carefully if you would like to apply for Student Council for the
2005-2006 school year.
1.
Read through
all of the enclosed information before you make a final decision
to run for Student Council.
2.
Talk to your
parents to make sure they will support you in this decision and support
VHS and our community.
3.
Fill out the
enclosed application and prepare a resume. You must maintain a 3.0 GPA
if you run for an officer position and a 2.75 if you run for a class
representative. Grades are very important; you will miss approximately
5 activity days next year on Student Council trips.
4.
Have one
teacher and one community leader write you a letter of
recommendation on the enclosed sheets (they are then to place the letter
in a sealed envelope and return to Mrs. Gallagher by 3:20 on Friday,
April 8th.
5.
Having high
standards for yourself, as well as for our school and community, is very
important. As you know, all eyes are on VHS Student Council. Carefully
read the Code of Ethics and sign your name in the appropriate space if
you feel that you can fulfill all standards set forth. Please have your
parents sign in the space so designated along with their daytime
telephone number for verification of their signature.
6.
You will be
required to go through an interview on April 12th, at a time that will
be assigned to you during school hours. Please keep in mind the
appropriate dress for an interview. If you have any questions about the
resume and/or interview, see Mrs. Gallagher either during 5th
hour or during encore.
7.
If you will
be a Junior or Senior during the 2005-2006 school year you will be
required to attend BASIC Leadership Camp either during Session 1 (June
12 – 17) or Session 2 (July 17 – 22) on the campus of Northeastern in
Tahlequah. The cost is $250, which must be mailed with an application
by May 1. If you have already attended BASIC and will be a Senior next
year you may attend Advanced, though it is not a requirement.
8.
We will have
some fundraisers next year, as well as many service projects. Your
involvement in both is mandatory. Student Council is a service
organization (helping others), as well as leadership training. You must
agree to put 100% into your home, school, and community.
9.
If you are elected to Student Council you
will be required to complete at least 2 hours of community
service per month. This is very important to our community, and helps
you since many scholarships now ask for hours of community service per
year.
