This group of middle students are working on their digital passport as they tour the national weather service in Norman from their classroom seat. This was the first of many planned virtual tours to be completed this year. The interactive technology that makes this possible is a part of the Gear Up grant the school received late last year. Students are able to interact with the presenters and ask questions through out the experience.

Mrs. Young's 7th and 8th grade math classes are shown forming a human box and whisker plot. Mrs. Young attended a week long math workshop at OU this summer, which incorporates authentic learning techniques through hands-on, group involved activities. Mrs. Young will continue to partner with the K20 Learn team, for the 2019-2020 school year, to ensure enrichment for math students. The Success Training is a result of the Valliant Middle School Success Grant, rewarding the middle school with funds for IPADS, chrome books, and smart televisions for the 2019-2020 school year

Ms. Vaught’s STEM classes recently visited the Oklahoma Geological Survey OPIC in Norman. Students received “hands on” learning experiences in the field of geology. In addition, they met an anthropologist, seismologist, petroleum geologist and a field geologist and could ask questions. The students learning experience was not over at the end of the trip. They returned with fossils and minerals to research as well as their very own Raspberry Shake Seismometer. The Raspberry Shake will be producing real-time data which is sent to and used by OGS seismic analysts. If the device detects an earthquake, scientists will use that data right away to start figuring out where the earthquake happened and how big it was! That makes our students true citizen scientists! This is the first seismometer placed in our area by a research group.
